The ABCs of Breastfeeding

Everything a Mom Needs to Know for a Happy Nursing Experience

We have all heard about the physical and emotional benefits of breastfeeding for the new mom and her baby. Breast milk provides proper nourishment, helps strengthen a baby’s immune system, and deepens the mother-child bond. Repeated medical studies have shown that breastfed babies have higher IQs, fewer diseases, and lower incidence of obesity. Studies also show that nursing mothers have fewer cases of breast and ovarian cancer and are at a lower risk of obesity. However, nursing doesn’t always happen as naturally as one might expect.

As a Neonatal Practitioner, Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant and mother of two, Stacey H. Rubin knows the difficulties new moms can experience. Now, in THE ABCS OF BREASTFEEDING: Everything a Mom Needs to Know for a Happy Nursing Experience (AMACOM 2008), she offers a practical and reader-friendly guide that will help every new mother feel comfortable and confident about feeding her baby.

Through her work with mothers all over Connecticut, Stacey H. Rubin understands the dilemmas of the modern mother: combining breastfeeding with your career, breastfeeding relaxed and self-assured in public, drinking a safe amount of alcohol, what foods are healthy for both baby and mother, and the role breastfeeding takes in your family.

From pregnancy to weaning, this helpful book will show nursing mothers how to:

• find a doctor who is breastfeeding-friendly

• prepare for nursing even before birth

• hold her baby comfortably after birth

• recognize the signs when baby is hungry

• build a healthy milk supply

• take necessary steps that will prevent breastfeeding difficulties

• recognize when pain is a problem

• breastfeed without losing sleep

• know when to stop breastfeeding

Illustrated with real-life stories from the author’s own private practice of women who have overcome common and not-so-common breastfeeding difficulties, THE ABCS OF BREASTFEEDING will help expectant and new mothers turn their nursing experiences into a joyful one and prevent problems before they arise.

“an informative and a reassuring book to any mother… Her fascinating client stories, interweaved throughout, effectively illustrate the issues and success of new and experienced breastfeeding mothers alike”
